Karan Johar brings Meluha to life
Karan Johar to adapt Amish Tripathi’s book for the big screen
Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has landed the film rights of Amish Tripathi’s best-selling debut novel, The Immortals of Meluha. The book had attracted much attention since Amish announced he was on the lookout for a producer to adapt his book. Producers from Hollywood and Bollywood were vying for the film rights, even as his second book in the Shiva Trilogy, The Secret of the Nagas was launched.
Film director Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has landed the film rights of The Immortals of Meluha. Johar said that he was “blown away with the world of Meluha and rivetted by Amish’s creation of it. I think the book lends itself beautifully for celluloid and we are very excited to promote Amish’s labour of love effectively.” The director was confirmed to be looking into the finer details of the production, along with the screenplay. Retitled as Shuddhi, the film will be directed by Karan Malhotra (of Agneepath fame) and will star Hrithik Roshan as Lord Shiva. The role of Sati is still undecided but is rumoured to be either Deepika Padukone or Kareena Kapoor. Initial reports suggested that the entire team of Agneepath would reunite for the film. As a result, actress Priyanka Chopra was believed to be in the reckoning for the female lead. But after brainstorming amongst themselves, the makers narrowed their choice down to Padukone and Kapoor. “Quite a few names came up, but finally, after seeing the screenplay, they reckon either of these two actors are the best fit for the role,” said the source reporting about the film’s progress to Daily News. However, The Times of India reported that Shuddhi would not be based on The Immortals of Meluha.
